Pacifico Energy Korea (PEK) joined forces with local communities to accelerate the development of its Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project in Jindo County, South Jeolla Province. PEK held a series of offshore wind briefing sessions for residents and fishermen from Donggeocha Island, the Maenggol Archipelago (including Maenggol, Juk, and Gwak islands), and Seogeocha Island. The sessions were part of the collaborative efforts outlined in the “Agreement to Establish a Regional Consultative Group to Activate the Pacifico Jindo Offshore Wind Cluster and Regional Development” signed Sept. 27 by the Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project and the Tri-Island Committee, representing the residents and fishermen of Donggeocha Island, the Maenggol Archipelago, and Seogeocha Island.

The sessions began on the morning of Nov. 7 on Seogeocha Island and continued on to Donggeocha and Maenggol islands, engaging approximately 100 local residents and representatives from fishing associations. Recognizing the island residents and fishermen – many of whom are elderly – as key stakeholders in the Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project, PEK conducted the sessions onsite in village halls and seaweed harvesting areas on each island to ensure accessibility. As a gesture of goodwill, and to celebrate the community partnership, seasonal apples and haepssal, or freshly harvested rice from the Jindo region, were distributed to residents of the Maenggol Archipelago and Donggeocha Island. Additionally, funding was provided on Seogeocha Island to support improvements to local facilities.

The Tri-Island Committee stated, “The Tri-Island Committee, representing Donggeocha Island, the Maenggol Archipelago, and Seogeocha Island, welcomes the Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project that fosters good relationship with local residents. We’re committed to actively supporting and working with PEK to speed up the development of the Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project.”

Seung-Ho Choe, Representative Director of Pacifico Energy Korea, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “The success of offshore wind projects requires ongoing communication between local residents, fishermen, and developers to pursue mutual growth.” He added, “We are committed to ensuring that the Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project, in partnership with the local community, produces reliable clean energy while enhancing South Jeolla Province and Jindo County’s offshore wind competitiveness and contributing to job creation.”

As Korea’s first U.S.-based offshore wind developer, Pacifico Energy Korea is advancing a 3.2 GW offshore wind cluster off Jindo County, South Jeolla Province, comprising the Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project (420 MW), Manho Offshore Wind Project (990 MW), and Jindobaram Offshore Wind Project (1.8 GW). Once completed, this cluster will be one of the largest offshore wind farm clusters in the APAC region. The first phase of the Jindo Offshore Wind cluster, the Myeong Ryang Offshore Wind Project, is currently undergoing the required licensing processes.
